12V IP68 LED Strip with U-Shaped Aluminum Profile for Landscape Lighting Project

Project Overview

For an outdoor landscape lighting project, the customer required a waterproof LED strip solution suitable for architectural and decorative lighting applications.
The project quantity was approximately 322 meters, and the original specification included a 12V LED strip, 10W/m power consumption, IP68 waterproof protection, warm white light, and aluminum profile installation.
During the specification review, we found that different project documents listed different color temperatures. One document showed 3500K, while another listed 3000K.
Before recommending the final product, the color temperature requirement was clarified and confirmed as:
3000K
This step was important because project documents can sometimes contain conflicting technical information. Confirming the final specification before production helps avoid color inconsistency and installation problems later.

Project Requirements

The main project requirements were:
  • Product: Waterproof LED Strip
  • Input Voltage: DC12V
  • Power: 10W/m
  • Color Temperature: 3000K
  • Waterproof Rating: IP68
  • Installation: U-shaped aluminum profile
  • Application: Landscape and architectural lighting
  • Project Quantity: Approximately 322m
  • Required luminous efficiency: approximately 90 lm/W
The lighting needed to provide a continuous warm white lighting effect while remaining suitable for wet or outdoor environments.

Recommended LED Strip Solution

Based on the confirmed requirements, a waterproof SMD LED strip solution was selected.

LED Strip Specification

  • LED Type: SMD2835
  • LED Density: 120 LEDs/m
  • Voltage: DC12V
  • Power: 10W/m
  • Color Temperature: 3000K
  • PCB Width: 8mm
  • Waterproof Rating: IP68
  • Waterproof Structure: Integrated silicone extrusion
  • PCB Color: White
  • Cable: Waterproof cables at both ends
  • Packing: 5 meters per reel
The integrated silicone extrusion structure provides stronger waterproof protection than a basic coated LED strip and is more suitable for landscape lighting installations where moisture resistance is important.

Matching the LED Strip with an Aluminum Profile

The project also required a U-shaped aluminum profile for installation and fixing.
One important point during product selection was that the aluminum profile could not be chosen only according to the 8mm PCB width.
After IP68 silicone extrusion, the final LED strip dimensions become larger than the original PCB.
Therefore, the correct selection process is:
LED strip PCB width → Finished waterproof strip dimensions → Aluminum profile internal dimensions → Installation allowance
The final width and height of the waterproof strip must be confirmed before choosing the aluminum channel.
If the internal channel is too narrow, several problems may occur:
  • The LED strip may not fit into the profile
  • The silicone surface may be compressed
  • The strip may become uneven after installation
  • The waterproof layer may be damaged
  • Installation at corners may become difficult
For this reason, the waterproof strip dimensions should always be checked before confirming the aluminum profile model.

Why U-Shaped Aluminum Profiles Are Used

A U-shaped aluminum profile can provide several benefits for LED strip installations.
It helps:
  • Fix the LED strip securely
  • Improve installation appearance
  • Keep the lighting line straight
  • Protect the strip from mechanical damage
  • Make project installation easier
  • Improve heat dissipation in some applications
Depending on the project, the profile can be fixed by screws, mounting clips, recessed installation, or other mounting methods.
For this project, the exact fixing method still needed to be confirmed according to the site conditions.

Sample Testing Before Mass Production

For a project of more than 300 meters, direct mass production without sample testing would create unnecessary risk.
A small test assembly was therefore recommended before final production.
A practical sample set can include:
  • 5m IP68 LED strip
  • 1m or 2m U-shaped aluminum profile
  • Mounting clips
  • End caps if required
  • Related installation accessories
The sample should be used to verify:
  1. Whether the 3000K color temperature matches the project requirement
  1. Whether the brightness is sufficient
  1. Whether the LED strip fits correctly inside the aluminum profile
  1. Whether the waterproof silicone remains undamaged after installation
  1. Whether the installation method is suitable for the project
  1. Whether the lighting effect is continuous and uniform
  1. Whether voltage drop is acceptable over the required length
Once the sample is approved, mass production can proceed with significantly lower technical risk.

Voltage Drop Consideration

Since the project uses a 12V LED strip, voltage drop must also be considered.
The selected LED strip is packed in 5-meter reels, and long continuous runs should not be powered from one end without checking voltage drop.
For many 12V LED strip installations, using approximately 5 meters per power feed is a safer approach.
If long sections are connected from a single power source, the far end of the strip may become visibly dimmer.
For large landscape projects, power distribution should therefore be planned according to:
  • LED strip length
  • Power consumption
  • Cable distance
  • Wire size
  • Power supply location
  • Number of feeding points
Correct power distribution can help maintain consistent brightness across the entire installation.

Supply Scope Should Be Confirmed Clearly

Another important point in this project was defining exactly what should be included in the quotation.
The LED strip supplier may provide different supply options.

Option 1: LED Strip Only

Includes:
  • 12V IP68 LED strip
This option is suitable when the contractor already has aluminum profiles, power supplies, and installation accessories.

Option 2: LED Strip + Aluminum Profile

Includes:
  • IP68 LED strip
  • U-shaped aluminum profile
  • Mounting accessories
  • End caps if required
This provides a more complete lighting installation solution.
Other items such as power supplies, electrical wiring, control equipment, and site installation should be confirmed separately.
Clear supply scope helps avoid misunderstandings during quotation and project execution.

Key Lessons from This Project

This case highlights several important points when supplying LED strip products for engineering projects.

1. Always verify conflicting specifications

Different drawings and tender documents may contain different parameters.
Color temperature, voltage, power, waterproof rating, and dimensions should be confirmed before production.

2. Waterproof dimensions matter

The PCB width is not the final product width after waterproof extrusion.
The finished waterproof strip size must be matched with the aluminum profile.

3. Test the complete system

For project lighting, the LED strip should not be evaluated separately.
The complete combination should include:
LED Strip + Waterproof Structure + Aluminum Profile + Power Supply + Installation Method

4. Consider voltage drop early

Especially for 12V LED strips, long-distance installation requires careful power distribution.

5. Sample approval reduces project risk

A small-scale sample test can prevent large-scale installation problems.

Recommended Project Workflow

For similar landscape or architectural lighting projects, a practical process is:
Step 1: Review project drawings and tender specifications
Step 2: Identify conflicting technical parameters
Step 3: Confirm voltage, power, color temperature, waterproof rating, and quantity
Step 4: Select the LED strip
Step 5: Confirm finished waterproof strip dimensions
Step 6: Match the correct aluminum profile
Step 7: Prepare a complete sample assembly
Step 8: Test brightness, installation, waterproof structure, and voltage drop
Step 9: Obtain customer approval
Step 10: Proceed with mass production and project supply

Conclusion

For landscape lighting projects, selecting an LED strip is only one part of the overall solution.
A reliable project solution requires the LED strip, waterproof structure, aluminum profile, installation method, and power distribution to work together.
In this project, the key technical challenge was not only meeting the 12V / 10W/m / 3000K / IP68 specification, but also ensuring that the waterproof LED strip could be correctly matched with the U-shaped aluminum profile.
By confirming specifications first and testing the complete installation system before mass production, the project can achieve more stable lighting performance and reduce installation risks.
