How to Verify UL Certification for LED Strips and Power Supplies

Learn how to verify UL certification for LED strips and power supplies, check exact models and avoid misleading certification claims.

When sourcing LED strips for commercial, architectural or industrial lighting projects, buyers may need evidence that the exact products selected meet applicable safety requirements. A supplier’s general statement that its products are “UL certified” cannot establish certification for every model or configuration.

LED strips, power supplies, connectors and other components may have different certification statuses. This buying guide explains how to review the exact model, find relevant certification records and evaluate alternatives before purchase approval.

1. Understand Product Certification and Component Recognition

UL Solutions offers different certification and recognition programs depending on the product and its intended application. A UL Listed product has been evaluated against applicable requirements within a defined scope. A UL Recognized Component is generally intended for use within a larger product or assembly and can be subject to specific conditions of acceptability.

UL recognition of an LED, PCB, wire or another component does not automatically establish UL certification for the complete LED strip. In the same way, a power supply’s UL certification does not extend to an uncertified LED strip connected to it.

Buyers should check the actual certification type and the product or configuration covered, rather than relying on an image of a mark or an unrelated supplier certificate.

2. Verify the Exact Product Model in UL Product iQ

UL Product iQ is an official UL Solutions database that can help buyers review certification information.

UL certification verification workflow for LED strips and power supplies
  1. Request the exact manufacturer name, product model and applicable certification file number or official record.
  2. Search the manufacturer, file number, product category or model in UL Product iQ.
  3. Check the certification type and whether the exact model or configuration is included in the relevant record.
  4. Review electrical ratings, intended use, installation conditions and any listed limitations.
  5. Confirm the documentation matches the item being proposed for the project. If it cannot be confirmed, ask the certification holder for clarification.

Verification principle: A file number from one product model or manufacturer must not be used to imply that a different model is certified.

3. Evaluate LED Strips and Power Supplies Separately

A finished lighting installation may involve LED tape, drivers, connectors, cables, mounting profiles and a complete luminaire. Each item may have different requirements, and the requirements of the finished installation may go beyond those of any individual component.

Product or componentWhat the buyer should verify
COB or SMD LED stripExact strip model, certification type, product scope and applicable electrical ratings.
Waterproof LED stripExact construction and suitability for the intended environment, in addition to any relevant certification.
LED power supplyManufacturer, precise model, electrical ratings and the corresponding certification record.
Connectors and wiringApplicable component ratings and installation conditions.
Finished luminaire or systemAny additional certification, code or installation requirements for the completed assembly.

An IP65 or IP67 designation concerns ingress protection under specified testing conditions; it does not itself demonstrate UL certification. Similarly, CE marking and RoHS documentation are not substitutes for a UL finished-product certification.

4. Check How Design Changes Affect Certification Scope

Changes to PCB design, input voltage, wiring, encapsulation, waterproof construction, connectors, components or installation method can affect whether an existing certification record covers a revised model.

For example, a silicone-coated version of an IP20 strip should not automatically be assumed to fall under the same certification scope as the original non-waterproof construction. A qualified technical reviewer or the certification holder should confirm coverage before a certification claim is made.

This is particularly important for OEM/ODM projects where a supplier may be adapting a standard strip to fit a custom profile or installation.

5. Compare Alternatives Before Project Approval

When the originally proposed LED strip cannot meet a required certification condition, suppliers should clearly identify the limitation. A possible alternative should be assessed for both certification and engineering compatibility.

Environmental / IP ratingTo be confirmedTo be confirmed
Certification evidenceVerify original modelVerification pending; check exact candidate model in the applicable database

Document any differences in electrical parameters, construction, light output and installation conditions. A candidate alternative is not approved merely because it resembles the original product.

6. Prepare a Complete Technical Approval Package

Before a buyer approves a certification-sensitive purchase, a useful documentation package may contain:

  • Exact product model, manufacturer and technical datasheet.
  • Verified certification record or official database reference for that model, where applicable.
  • Relevant electrical ratings, installation conditions and limitations.
  • A comparison of differences from the original project specification.
  • An updated quotation or Proforma Invoice identifying the model proposed.
  • Written buyer approval of the final specifications where substitutions are involved.

This approach helps the buyer, designer, supplier and installer work from the same approved specification.

7. HST Light’s Current Certification Status

HST Light manufactures COB LED strips, SMD LED strips, Neon Flex and custom LED lighting solutions for international B2B projects. CE and RoHS documentation may be available for applicable models, subject to checking the exact product and supporting documents.

HST Light LED strip products do not currently hold UL finished-product certification. Some LED power supply options offered through third-party suppliers may have UL certification, but their exact model numbers and supporting records must be verified separately. Power-supply certification does not certify the connected LED strip.

For projects requiring UL-certified LED strips, our team will explain the current limitation clearly and assist with technical specification comparison. We will not present component recognition, raw-material evaluations or driver certification as UL certification of an HST LED strip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a UL-certified power supply mean the connected LED strip is certified?

No. The power supply and LED strip must be evaluated according to their respective applicable certification requirements.

Can LED strips made with UL Recognized Components be described as UL Listed?

No. Component recognition does not automatically establish finished-product certification.

Does IP67 mean that an LED strip is UL-certified?

No. An ingress protection rating is different from a UL safety certification.

Do CE and RoHS documents replace UL certification?

No. They concern different regulatory or conformity requirements and are not interchangeable.

What should buyers request before ordering?

Ask for the exact model, approved specification, applicable certification record and the conditions under which the product will be installed.

Conclusion: Verify the Model, Not Just the Mark

Reliable certification review begins with the exact proposed model and documented scope. Compare product specifications, review official records and confirm substitutions before purchase approval.
